Sushi Cake FYI and a Question
2009 June 25

I promised you all a list of the actual items used to decorate the Sushi cake and here is the list directly from Rashele, who decorated this amazing cake!
” I used: Swedish fish, shredded coconut, fruit rollups, fondant (for the bowl), and the sauce was cornstarch, water and brown food coloring. Oh, and real chopsticks.
”
So I am curious how many of you are sushi fans! Let me know if you like sushi and what your favorite kind is….California rolls, Dragon rolls, Shrimp rolls? Did you like sushi when you first tried it, or was it something that you grew to love after trying several different kinds?

I LOVE sushi!!! I could seriously eat it every day and not get sick of it! It was ok when I first tried it… nothing special… and then it totally grew on me!! There is this crazy place near me that has the best weirdest kinds. I wrote about it here: http://stephchows.blogspot.com/2009/01/foodbuzz-24-24-24-sushi-love.html
I love Vegetarian sushi made with brown rice! Yum-o! and yes, I loved it from the start. Don’t care for other sushi’s though!
Have a great day,
Pam

Love sushi! I started with California rolls and worked my way up to some other stuff. I’m not a fan of whitefish, but other than that I’ve liked everything I’ve tried. LOVE caterpillar rolls! When I want something more plain, I go for yellow tail and scallion. (Shrimp tempura ones are really good too.)
I want to try sushi so badly! I’ve had seared ahi tuna that was incredible though. Other than that, I’m behind on the sushi train
i like california rolls, but that’s about it. i don’t like the taste or texture of the nori that they use in traditional sushi. the cake is really cute!
I am not the biggest fan of sushi. I always seem to get a stomach ache. I think it may be from the rice, it is a bit too heavy for me. When I do eat them I have California rolls – I can’t handle raw fish.
That is an incredibly creative cake! Nice job!
I love sushi BUT only the rolls- Never ever the raw slabs or sushimi! hahaha I pretty much like all the rolls and I have tried some pretty creative kinds in some great sushi places here in Toronto. YUM!
that cake is so awesome!
I love sushi of all kinds. My favorite are the tuna and salon, but I also like a good dragon roll. And chirashi, which is basically a big bowl of rice with the fish on top 9think reconstructed sushi). I liked it since the first time I tried it, but it did take me a while to get over the “squeam” factor so I stuck with mainly things like Cali rolls for a long time
That cake is just amazing, especially with the short list of ingredients.
My two faves are rainbow roll and this roll with egg, eel, avocado (local restaurant’s “house special roll”). I didn’t like sushi as a kid, but grew to love it. But, I still don’t like sashimi (plain raw fish). I need some rice and other stuff with it
.
I call myself a fake sushi eater. I ONLY like California Rolls! LOL
Megan I love this cake. I have a niece who absolutely adores sushi. I’ll have to send her a link to your site. Thank you so much for sharing your decorating secrets. You rock.
I’ve only ever had sushi a few times, and the kind with raw fish only once (despite having lived in Japan for four years as a teenager!) but I really love it. I think I prefer the simple vegetable-stuffed ones rolled with seaweed, but the raw fish on rice fingers is pretty good too. And now I’m pregnant and can’t eat it!
That is such an awesome cake, I love it! Especially since that’s the kind of sushi I could actually eat right now…
I’m a big sushi lover, for sure
I can’t really pick a favourite roll though – I love them all! Dynamite roll, salmon & avocado, veggie, California…the list goes on. As long as it’s made with fresh, quality ingredients, I’m all for it.
And I don’t even remember the first time I tried sushi! So I may or may not have liked it upon first try.
I don’t care for sushi. I’ve tried a couple of different kinds and none of them appeal to me.
On a side note, I saw this and thought of you Megan: http://blogs.webmd.com/healthy-recipe-doctor/2009/06/taste-test-tuesday-starbucks-gluten.html?ecd=wnl_hlc_062509
Wow… the sushi cake is a work of art. I love me some sushi, especially the nigiri with the freshest fish like salmon, yellow tail and albacore. For the not so healthy cooked rolls, I like spider roll, Philadelphia roll, crunchy roll, etc…
How did she think of this? It’s so creative. I’m so impressed.
i am coming around to sushi
i do love it with smoked salmon, and slowly getting more adventurous!
might choose the cake though
I like sushi, especially during summer time! I have no favorites, I love them all!
It wasn’t a first time love.. I think because it wasn’t good quality, but when I went to a nice restaurant, the rice of the sushi was sooooo well prepared, I immediately fall in love with it!
What a clever idea! I never even THOUGHT of sushi before I met my husband – I only like the cooked rolls – except I have tried and love something called a Happy Avo – its diced raw sushimi tuna, in an avocado drizzled with balsamic – amazing!
Happy Friday Meg!
That cake is freaking gorgeous and creative and eye-popping and breath-taking. Oh my…I feel like I’ll have to dig in with my chopsticks!
My fav sushi? I’m not such a big fan of sushi because…well, I don’t like rice xp…But I love fresh raw salmon…sashimi style!
Big sushi fan, but it has only happened within the last two years. Brazil has the largest pop of Japanese outside of Japan so we are living it up with the awesome sushi at South American prices. First I wouldn’t do any raw fish, but I’ve slowly evolved to loving salmon sashimi. I think hot philadelphia is my favorite though. Thanks for the details on the cake!
What a ridiculously cool cake!
But I might take a piece of cake before a piece of sushi… yum.
I’m a big sushi fan, raw fish and all.
I’m pretty sure people are either sushi lovers or haters… and many of the haters just can’t get past the raw fish thing, which is too bad for them
I totally dig sushi. I’ll pretty much try anything, but I really enjoy spicy tuna and spider rolls. Anything with octopus and eel are pretty cool too, because lets be honest, we don’t eat that at home
