Gelato vs. Ice Cream: Which One Is Your Winner?

gelato

One of the most frequent stops on the recent trip to Beaver Creek was Rimini. I couldn’t help but stare at the sight of all the delicious creamy flavors of gelato. Of course, in food blogger fashion, I had to whip out the camera and take pictures of all the creamy goodness.

On this day, the fresh flavor offerings included peanut butter, espresso, cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, popcorn (yes, really!), strawberry shortcake, dark chocolate, vanilla, and the best of all…CAKE BATTER (loving the sprinkles)!

So what makes gelato different from ice cream? It definitely has a different feel on the tongue. It also seems to have a more intense, rich flavor in my opinion. Here are some gelato vs. ice cream facts:

  • Ice cream has a minimum of 10 percent fat. Gelato is made with a greater proportion of whole milk to cream, so it contains on average five to seven percent fat.
  • Gelato is churned at a slower speed than ice cream, so it is more dense. Not as much air is whipped into the mixture.
  • Ice cream is served frozen. Gelato is not completely frozen. It is stored and served at a slightly warmer temperature.

So which one is the winner for you…Ice cream or Gelato? What flavors of gelato have you tried?

I’ve sadly never had gelato either. I’ve heard remarkable things, and I’m sure it’s something special, but I’m just not a ice cream cat. I will admit that cake batter sounds amazing though :)

We ate gelato several times a day when we were in Italy. I loved all the fruit flavors. Looks just like the yummy gelato in Italy!

Very interesting! I didn’t know all those facts that make them different before!

LOVE gelato because it’s so creamy! However, for the Wisconsin resident in me, I have to give it up for Frozen Custard over both gelato and ice cream. I had never heard of it before moving from Chicago to Milwaukee and now I’m hooked!

Interesting facts. I prefer gelato, they feel richer and creamier.

A few months ago I would have said ice cream, but after visiting Italy, I am a gelato girl!

For me, a properly made gelato beats ice cream any day.

But if you added Italian water ices, and frozen custard into the choice mix the decision would be a lot harder for me!

In delicious expectation, this blog really delivers the goods…as in sweets for the palate. My choice? Gelato..preferably with mocha and almonds. But only a spoonful here and there. A moment on the lips is a lifetime on the hips and as a 40 something busy woman’s life goes, I’m just not that disciplined at ‘routine’ anything especially excercise. Thank you for this lovely blog post. To your continued success.

Hugs,
Roby

Everything looks amazing!!! I’m recently getting into sorbet- it’s so sweet and refreshing!

Gelato is number one for me! Although I have to admit the best I have had is in Europe. I haven’t found a brand or shop I absolutely love in the US. Fave flavors for me are pistachio, nutella and those with liqueurs in them like Baileys. Yum!

Spiceaholic August 6, 2009 at 10:54 pm

I love both, but gelato just seems more indulgent to me, probably because it’s denser.

I’ve had melon, apple (more like sour apple), chocolate, chocolate-hazelnut, mango sencha, pineapple basil, and many more flavors and love them all.

I actually have no preference between icecream and gelato. Don’t get me wrong, i LOVE gelato, but sometimes it’s just too rich and heavy for what I care to partake in at the time.

Of course, I’m also a huge fan of the light hardly-there fruit sorbet.

gelato ftw.

Oooh thaaat’s what gelato is. So that’s like Cold Stone Creamery ice cream… that’s why it’s so different and delicious!

Jessie August 13, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I loveeeee gelato, it so much more creamier and lighter than regular ice cream. It also tends to be less sweeter than your average ice cream. Some times ice cream can be too sweet to the point that I am unable to finish it.

Gelato! For sure :)

My favorite flavoures are sour cherry, lemon, melon, black mulberry and Gum Mastic gelato!

That is like asking if I like breakfast or lunch better.

I like them both – just depends on the mood and flavor.

I disagree with the comment about churning speed/air. It has only been in the past 15 years that ice cream keeps having more and more air churned into it – mostly as a means of reducing the quantity of cream and milk, therefore cost. The top shelf ice creams are still extremely dense, and much more satisfying. A little goes a long way.

I work in a Gelato Shop and I have to say that it kicks ice creams ass

Dori August 24, 2009 at 7:10 pm

I prefer gelato. I love the creaminess and richness!

Erica August 25, 2009 at 3:28 pm
