Down In The Deep Fried Heart of Texas

Midway rides, shows, vendors, petting zoos……they all exist at the fair, but the main topic of every Texas State Fair conversation is the food! The food is so important that the State Fair website had a food locator page! On my visit to the fair, the lines for the fried butter were the longest. I have heard that is tastes like a deep fried roll with butter in the middle. Some varieties had flavors like garlic, cherry, and grape injected into the middle.

Other interesting food offerings at at the fair included:

  • Deep Fried Peanuts
  • Deep Fried Pizza
  • Deep Fried Snickers
  • Deep Fried Moon Pies
  • Deep Fried S’mores
  • Chili Cheese Dog Pot Pie
  • Fried Apple and Peanut Butter on a Stick

softpretzel

I did not venture into the land of fried foods! I stuck to my tried and true soft pretzel for my fair food fun. This was not just any soft pretzel. It was a Texas Twister Pretzel that was about the size of my head! They say things are bigger in Texas…and the soft pretzels definitely are.

One of my favorite parts of the fair is the General Store in the Food and Fiber Pavilion. Here are some of the fun offerings that line the shelves.

Of course, no Texas State Fair Post is complete without a shot of Big Tex.

I would love to hear any fun fair food stories that you have? Have you tried any crazy fair foods?

Fried peanuts and friend butter?! Wow! I think the most rebellious fried item I’ve ever had is oreos!

Fried Snickers! What? People really do fry anything! I just went to an apple festival this weekend and it was amazing! I love fairs!

Barbara October 5, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Sounds like a fun outing. Last year at the fair we had fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Man, those fried pb&j sound great! The fried apples and pb on a stick sound yum too! We have fried Coke at the Arkansas State Fair…although I’ve never tried it. Sounds gross to me!

Lindsay October 5, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Fried butter? That sounds so gross!

I usually stick to the soft pretzels at the fair. They are by far my favorite!

I love the corn dogs, but I can’t get over the prices of fair food! We had a fair themed pot luck dinner at my church recently, and I bought a box of corn dogs to take. Two of them at the fair cost more than the entire box of 16 I bought at the store! I know you are paying for convenience, but this was the way everything there was priced. I thought I would try to be a little healthier and go for a baked potato… it was either $3 or $4 (I can’t remember).

I tried deep fried oreos one time and was NOT impressed. I do really like the giant roasted corn and roasted turkey legs though. It makes me feel like a cave man, walking around with the big turkey leg. :)

looks like you had a blast! I still can’t wrap my head around fried butter LOL!

Jennifer Smith October 5, 2009 at 5:58 pm

The poster who said he was not impressed by deep-friend Oreos is crazy. I tried them once and nearly died of a mouthgasm. That being said fried butter just sounds horrendous and all these fried foods is a great example of just how fat the South is. Sheesh. Makes me glad to a Northeastener.

That being said, all those random food photos are awesome. Dr. Pepper beef jerky?? Unreal!

I had the Fried Peaches and Cream (the new food contest winner this year). Was sooooooooo good!!! Made with fresh peaches. Also tried the Belgian Waffle Balls……also delicious, but more overpriced than most fair food.
Bought the Dr Pepper beef jerky for my daughter…she is a DP lover….but she hasn’t tried it yet.
In the Food and Fiber building, I sampled Tornado Oatmeal Cake. It was heaven! The mix is sold by House of Gold Gourmet Food Mixes out of Marshall, TX. I bought the mix. Can’t wait to try it!

I don’t usually go to fairs, but I might have to start! I would have loved to try a bit of the smores or snickers.

We missed our state fair this year so I didn’t get to see what was new on the deep fried food horizon but I have tried the Oreos and PB&J (which I liked) and the Twinkies and Three Muskeeters (which I didn’t). Been dying to try the Deep Fried Coke if only to be able to say I’ve tried something called Deep Fried Coke.

donna October 6, 2009 at 2:54 am

OMG! Did u say deep fried snickers.. be still my heart, how sinfully yum.

Looks like a great time, I could spend hours in front of all those jars!

Also from Texas and 2 years ago, we tried the Fried Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. It was very pricey and I was kinda disappointed that there was only 3 balls (each about the size of a golf ball). Then I took my first bite and it was soooo yummy, BUT it was also soooo rich that I could only finish one ball!

My favorite is Fried Macaroni and Cheese…AWESOME!!!
